Bethesda Children’s Homes – Tlapa, Mexico
Dear Pastor and friends,

One year ago Friday night was the flood at the Bethesda Children’s Home farm. Friday night Hermano Manuel Cervantes was recalling, with tears in his eyes at our weekly staff meeting, how reluctantly he had left with his family as the river was rising. He had been sure nothing could topple their home with a six foot concrete and steel foundation. As the farm caretaker, he felt guilty leaving, but the next morning he knew he had made the right decision. His home, as well as the beautiful kitchen and bathrooms were lying on their sides. The auditorium was completely gone. All the crops had been washed away.
Now, one year later, we still do not know what to do with the farm. The river has changed course and beats furiously against what little land we have left. The top soil has been washed away and huge rocks dumped on the ground. Only one little group of banana trees has survived. We have been able to cut mangoes, grapefruits and tamarind from the tree for the children, but we are not sure how healthy the trees are.
The farm had been officially dedicated to the Lord exactly one week before the flood. Everything was so beautiful. So many of you had abundantly sacrificed. Our confidence is in the Lord to reward you as He sees fit and to show us how to go from here. As Spurgeon said, “God is too good to be unkind and He is too wise to be mistaken. And when we cannot trace His hand, we must trust His heart.” That is all we know to do.
The children’s home is off to a great start. On Tuesday, September 16, we celebrated Mexico’s Independence Day. The children were involved in playing games, eating special food, and enjoying a day off from their studies. Last week, twenty-five of the children prayed to put their faith in the Lord for salvation. Several of the teachers have asked me to thank you for your faithful support. They love having this opportunity to serve the Lord, teach the children and lead them to the Savior. Your prayers and financial support are invaluable to this ministry. I, also, thank you with all my heart. I could not be here without your backing.

How I thank God not one life was lost last year during the flood. God is so merciful! The children, the staff, and the buildings at the Homes were all spared. Yes, God is so good! Praise Him with me!
Looking unto Jesus,
Becky Patterson
